World-class vocalists to sing at St Chad's
The Sixteen, one of the world's greatest vocal ensembles, is to perform in Shrewsbury next month. For the first time, the town is included on the famous Choral Pilgrimage, the annual tour of the UK's finest cathedrals and churches, and The Sixteen will bring music back to the buildings for which it was written, and which are always sell-out events.
On Thursday, April 10, they will be presenting Thy Muse Lives On - Treasures of Tudor England at St Chad's Church, Shrewsbury, as part of the 2008 Choral Pilgrimage. This year's programme is devoted to three prolific Renaissance composers - Parsons, White and Tye.
After twenty-eight years of world-wide performance, The Sixteen have endless accolades which include being Associate Artists of the South Bank Centre, London, and The Voices of Classic FM as well as a glittering catalogue of recordings. The group has a reputation for performing a diversity of masterpieces spanning 500 years, drawn from the passions of conductor and founder, Harry Christophers.
Shropshire Music Trust's Music Director, Kate Hogwood, said: "Harry Christophers is known internationally as founder and conductor of The Sixteen as well as a regular guest conductor for many of the major symphony orchestras and opera companies worldwide." Awards include a Grand Prix du Disque for Handel's Messiah, numerous Schallplattenkritik and the coveted Gramophone Award for Early Music.
