Shropshire Star - 26 Nov 2007Crowds wowed at concert
The author of the award-winning novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin wowed the crowds at a Shropshire hotel - with his musical talent.
Louis de Bernieres performed in an hour-long family concert organised by The Shropshire Music Trust yesterday.
Dozens of people from across the country turned out to The Lion Hotel in Shrewsbury to see the author play with The Antonius Players in the concert, Nightingales, Elephants and Alexander Beetle.
De Bernieres' 1993 novel which has since been turned into an Hollywood movie starring Nicholas Cage and Penelope Cruz, received the 1995 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Book.
The author entertained an audience at 3pm yesterday.
Kate Hogwood, Director of The Music Trust, said: "The Antonius Players originally started as a flute trio and although the flute still remains central to their performances, they have proved their musical versatility by introducing other instruments using their own arrangements."
The concert was first performed at the 2006 Hay-on-Wye Literature Festival and has this year been seen at the Edinburgh Festival.
